Fortec Distribution Network Shortlisted For Two Awards

The Fortec Distribution Network, one of the UK’s leading palletised distribution businesses, has been shortlisted in two categories of The Logistics Awards 2019. The network, based at Watford Gap, has reached the finals for the Safety Award and the SME Operations Award for organisations with fewer than 500 employees.

It comes hot on the heels of Fortec’s Marketing Assistant, Harry Laverick, winning Apprentice of the Year in the Northamptonshire Logistics Awards. The network, which handles more than 5,000 pallets a night, is going from strength to strength as it continues to pursue a culture of constant improvement.

Following a £3 million investment in facilities at its national Hub last year the network also introduced a completely fresh approach to health and safety. The sea-change in safety culture was brought about with a systematic programme of training, communications and engagement with staff, from directors to warehouse floor, including establishing its own forklift truck driving training.

Stuart White, Operations General Manager of Fortec Distribution Network, said: “We are delighted to be in the running for two awards at The Logistics Awards 2019 and it is a testament to the hard work of everyone involved that we have achieved this recognition.

“We are determined to put Safety First and believe that if we do so further operational efficiencies will be gained as a result of having a well-managed workplace.”

Changes at the Hub include increasing the warehousing by 70,000 square feet, installing 126 high resolution CCTV cameras that can read address labels on individual pallets, new LED lighting, re-surfacing the truck park and applying anti-slip paint to warehouse floors. The CCTV cameras alone helped Fortec save significant amounts of money on insurance claims.

The safety culture at Fortec requires every employee to look out for both their own, and others’, safety with the expectation they will report any concerns. As well as investing heavily in training, Fortec has reviewed all processes at the Hub and overhauled its accident reporting systems.

The winners of the Logistics Awards 2019 will be revealed at a gala dinner at The Vox, Resorts World, Birmingham, on Thursday 26 September.
